These Red White and Blue Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats are a tasty and easy-to-make patriotic dessert for the 4th of July or Memorial Day.

How to Make the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture

How to Color the Rice Krispie Treat Mixture

You need to make three batches of Rice Krispie Treat mixture in Red White and Blue. For detailed instructions on how to make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture, check out our Best Ever Rice Krispie Treat Recipe.  I added the food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture BEFORE adding the Rice Krispie Cereal.  We used the Red, Pink and Blue food coloring from the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring system in the following amounts:

Step 1: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the White Layer
3 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal)
No Food Coloring

Step 2: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the Red Layer
3 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal)
6 Drops of Red Food Coloring

Step 3: Make the Rice Krispie Treat mixture for the Blue Layer
3 Cups of Rice Krispie Treat mixture (3 Tbsp. Butter/3 Cups Marshmallows/3 Cups Cereal)
8 drops of Blue Food Coloring/2 drops of Pink Food Coloring/1 drop of Red Food Coloring (Note:  This is the combination I used to get this pretty dark blue color.  I added the pink and red to counteract the yellow from the Rice Krispie cereal.  If you just use only Blue food coloring, your blue layer will probably be more aqua than American Flag blue.)

Assembly Instructions

Step 4: Pour the white batch of the Rice Krispie Treat mixture into a lightly buttered large cookie sheet.
Step 5: Press down the mixture into the cookie sheet.  I should fill approximately 1/3 of the cookie sheet.
Steps 6 & 7: Do the same thing with the red Rice Krispie Treat mixture.

Step 8: And finally repeat the process with the blue Rice Krispie Treat mixture.  Don’t press the three colors together. Allow the three strips to cool for 10-15 minutes.

Step 9: Remove the Red White and Blue Rice Krispie Treat mixture from the cookie sheet and stack them.  Red on the top, White in the middle, and Blue on the bottom.
Step 10: Cut the stack of Rice Krispie Treats down the middle length-wise and then stack them again.  You will now have six layers.
Step 11: Slice the 6 layer loaf into 1-inch slices.

Step 12: Trim the slices so the sides are even.
Step 13: Cut each slice into two pieces to create the Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats sticks.
Step 14: If you do the assembly while the Rice Krispie Treat layers as still warm, the layers will stick together.  We pressed them down a  bit after we had cut them into sticks.

These Red White and Blue Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats are a tasty and easy to make patriotic dessert for 4th of July or Memorial Day.

Ingredients

  • 9 cups Kellogg’s Rice Krispie Cereal
  • 9 cups Mini Marshmallows
  • 9 tablespoons Butter (Sweet Cream, Salted)
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System - Red
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System - Blue
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring System - Pink

Instructions

You will need to make three batches of Rice Krispie Treat mixture - a Red, White and Blue layer.

Directions for a single layer for the Rice Krispie Treats

  1. Melt 3 tbsp. Butter in a medium pan.
  2. Add 3 cups of Mini Marshmallows and stir until the marshmallows are completely melted.
  3. Take the pan off the heat.
  4. Add food coloring and mix.
  5. Add 3 cups of Rice Krispie Cereal and mix until they are completely covered with the marshmallow mixture.
  6. Allow the Rice Krispie Mixture to cool slightly.
  7. For each layer pour the Rice Krispie Treat mixture into a large cookie sheet.
  8. Flatten the mixture into a 4” row.
  9. Follow the above directions for each of the three colors.
  10. To assemble the Rice Krispe Treats:Once all three layers have cooled, stack the layers of Rice Krispie Treats. Blue on the bottom, then white and then red.
  11. Cut the stack of Rice Krispie Treats down the middle length-wise and then stack them again. You will now have six layers.
  12. Slice the 6 layer loaf into 1 inch slices.
  13. Then we cut each slice into two pieces to create the Firecracker Rice Krispie Treats sticks.

Notes

Food Coloring Formulas for Rice Krispie Treat mixture
Red: 6 drops of Red Food Coloring
Blue: 8 drops of Blue Food Coloring/2 drops of Pink Food Coloring/1 drop of Red Food Coloring
White: No Food Coloring
