We have taken an old stand-by (mashed potatoes), added something interesting (roasted garlic), and created a slightly elevated side dish (Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes) that is sure to please at your next meat and potatoes meal.  This is a must-make easy recipe for any holiday meal no matter the season. Enjoy!

How to Prepare the Potatoes

Step 1: Wash and peel the potatoes.
Step 2: Cut the peeled potatoes into equal-sized chunks. Place potatoes in a large pot and cover the potatoes with water.  (Add a little bit of salt to the water)
Step 3: Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat.  Simmer the potatoes until they are tender.
Step 4: Drain the water from the potatoes and place the cooked potatoes into a bowl.

How to prepare the Roasted Garlic

Step 5: Roast the garlic.  (You can find the detailed instructions here.).
Step 6: Once cooled, remove the cloves of garlic from the paper wrapper and smash with a fork.  
Step 7: While the potatoes are cooking, melt the butter in a small pan.  Add the milk and cream and stir until the milk warms up but does not come to a boil.  Take the milk off the heat.
Step 8: Add the smashed Roasted Garlic and stir until combined.

How to assemble the Mashed Potatoes

Step 9: Smash the potatoes with a fork or a potato masher.
Step 10: Add the Roasted Garlic, Butter, and Milk mixture to the potatoes.
Step 11: Stir with a spoon until combined. (If you want a smoother mashed potato, use a hand mixer.) Salt and Pepper to taste.
Step 12: Serve immediately.  You will want to serve these Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes piping hot.  So yummy!

Expert Tips and FAQ’s

Do I have to roast the garlic?

No. You can use regular minced garlic in these potatoes but the Roasted Garlic really adds something special. We have all the directions you’ll need to make Roasted Garlic right here.

How long with the mashed potatoes last in the refrigerator?

Stored in an airtight container, mashed potatoes should last 3-4 days in the refrigerator. Make sure to wait to put the potatoes in the container until they are at room temperature. You can freeze them too, for up to 3 months.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 pounds Russet Potatoes (approximately 8 medium potatoes)
  • 1/2 cup Milk
  • 1/4 cup Heavy Cream
  • 1/4 cup Melted Butter (Sweet Cream Salted)
  • 1 head Roasted Garlic
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Instructions

  1. Roast the garlic.  (You can find the detailed instructions here.). Once cooled, remove the cloves of garlic from the paper wrappers and smash with a fork.  Set aside.
